3/20/2024 0 Comments M10x1.25 shift knob suede![]() This was my last little chunk of cocobolo (of rosewood family from South America, very heavy and dense), I built 3 knobs from that lump- this one, one for myself, and one for "That's-A-Seamus" (who hasn't been around here in months) when he helped with the design specs for my knobs last spring. Socal1200r (Robert) will have the pleasure of properly displaying his new knob in his own car in a few days, but this is the final result of my handiwork. I'd probably be casting something in bronze that would weigh a crapload! Hmmm. ![]() Hey, I'm a woodworker! If I were a metalworker, well. But regardless of weight, it's holding the natural material of the shaped wood in my hand over other materials that does it for me. Heck, I like that round MX-5 knob, too, and maybe someday I'll buy one. Each picked by its user for any number if reasons over the other, be it function, aesthetic, or form. But which hammer was easier to move? (An exaggerated comparison to gear shift knobs, I know.) One knob is not superior to the other, they each have their own perceived benefits and drawbacks, depending on the users' tastes and needs.Ī metal ball bat, a wood ball bat. The maul has a bigger thud, but it also absorbs the impact more, giving a heavier, somewhat dulled/smooth feedback through the handle. Do the same thing with a 2 or 3 pound maul. Hold a light hammer a few inches above a mass of cast metal and let it drop. mechanical pathways(?) through the shift gates a bit more than you do with the heavier knobs (like the stock knobs), with the extra mass of the heavies absorbing the feel of the linkage movements, gate entry, and related moving stuff. I've read the same pro-cons of weight- heavy knob gives a fluid momentum through the gates, and a couple folk (not related to wood knobs I've made) commenting on the crisp, fast movement of the lighter wood, or even composite, knobs. Cocobolo, padauk, canarywood, big leaf maple burl. ![]() The wood knobs have come out weighing 4.5-5oz, half the weight of stock. I was caught off guard by its weight when I removed it to install a wood knob before I even left the dealer lot on car delivery day last spring.
